A year ago today, I played at my first open mic. As I had been composing music for about two years, I decided it was time to “find an audience.” So I visited Ye Olde Royal Oak, a pub and restaurant in San Jose, and played eight songs, four originals, and four covers. It was a good experience.
Since then, I played at 37 open mics, performed in several coffee houses, and sang in a few concerts, including Rock on the Mount.
I’ve learned it’s hard to find an audience. Venues are few. Open mics come and go. Events get canceled. On the other hand, I’ve found that audiences are encouraging. They like new music and want to hear new artists. All in all, it’s been a good experience. I look forward to keeping on.
I went down to The Ugly Mug for a one-year anniversary open mic. I played –
1. I For You (original)
2. I’ll Press On (original)
3. I Need You (original)
